Abstract
The supracondylar fracture of the humerus is the most common elbow fracture in children. But it is difficult for the treatment and also frequently associated with variable complications. Accurate anatomical reduction, the least regional trauma as
possible, and the maintenance of reduction are necessary to obtain excellent results. But Gartland type III in children, early closed reduction is difficult due to swelling, soft tissue interposition etc.
From Jan. 1989 to Dec. 1993, 33 patients with supracondylar fracture of the humerus of Gartland type III were admitted and treated by open reduction or closed reduction and internal fixation with or without skeletal traction at our hospital.
Among
them,
28 patient who were followed up more than one year were reviewed retrospectively.
1. The everage age was 6.5 years and the sex ratio was 3:1 in male to female.
2. The most common cause of fracture was fall from a height in 19 case(68%). The ratio of left to right was 1.7:1.
3. All cases were classified in extension type and Gartland type III. In the injuries associated with fracture, there were 5 neural injuries, median n-3 cases and ulna n-2 cases.
4. The everage bone union time were on traction group-4.9 weeks and non-traction group-4.5 weeks. By Flynn's criteria, the satisfactory results were in traction group-75% and in non-traction group-81%.
